Many women worry that weight training will somehow transform them into bodybuilders, so they spend hours doing cardio to maintain their feminine figure. The truth? Women can’t gain the same amount of muscle as men that easily as they do not have enough of the hormone testosterone that supports large increases in muscle mass. Women’s testosterone levels are a fraction of men.

The one thing you should worry about though is keeping your lean muscle mass up. Training with weights increases this! Simply put the more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn, this is because muscle is an active cell which requires fuel, fat is not. The more calories you burn, the leaner you’ll be able to get. When you talk about adding shape to your arms, losing body fat off your belly and getting defined abs and a peachy booty, you’re talking about adding muscle mass and losing fat. 

For women starting a new training program especially with weights can be an extremely daunting process. Not to mention the internet being littered with incorrect information. For years women have been advised to restrict their diets and do monotonous amounts of cardio and do 50 reps with pink dumbbells as a ‘toning’ process.

What has being An Angel meant to me? I remember when ally first reached out to me 3 years ago about being an angel. It was cosmic like the universe knew I needed something in my life. I grew up being active my whole life. I am the typical tomboy, I love workout clothes, messy buns and sneakers/sandals. I was a competitor, I played Collegiate Soccer for the University of Arizona. It was there I was diagnosed with my first form of heart disease Pericarditis. My playing career was done. As a competitor, I didn’t stop there, and I became a marathon runner with my dad. It was here that my life changed forever. My dad was my best friend, biggest fan, and ultimate supporter. He excepted me for who I was. March 12, 2006, my world came crashing down. My father died from an unknown heart disease Hypertrophic-Cardiomyopathy. This was 7 months before I was marrying the love of my life and my other huge supporter. During this time the silver lining is my dad saved my life. They ran more tests on me and discovers I had Wolf Parkinson’s White Syndrome (WPW). Had they not found it I would not be here today, a mother to my amazing daughter or wife to the most amazing supportive husband I could ask for.

I tell you all this because like I said Alicia and Ally’s Angels gave me a new focus and drive for me. It’s not only about the amazing coaches and support but the group of men and women who are sort of this group! You have newbies like me teaming with Pros and as a competitor, I’ve never been part of a group or team that supports each other more!
